Young again

I am participating in the Blogging From A-Z Challenge. Each day in April (except the last 4 Sundays), I will post topic themes that begin with the letters of the alphabet, from A-Z. Today's letter is Y.

Back when I was a kid, if you had asked me to name a basketball team, I would have blurted out "Harlem Globetrotters" without hesitation.  In fact, as a child of the '80s, I didn't really know there were other basketball teams for a very long time.  The Globetrotters were in cartoons and their theme song was probably the most recognizable tune of the time.  So when we heard they were coming to town, the hubs & I decided we HAD to take the kiddo.

We got there early, so we were able to snag a seat in the bleachers just 2 rows from the court.  The team came out & were very entertaining.  Seeing Trin so excited was great, but I have to admit it was pretty great seeing the actual Globetrotters in person.  The players have changed over the years, but the sentiment is the same.  They're all about family fun, making sure that the audience is having a great time & letting kids get involved in the game occasionally, too.

Trin was being uncharacteristically shy, so she didn't go down on the court when they had the kids come out to do the YMCA.  However her usual moxie shined through after the game when the players were giving autographs.  There was a time limit on how long the players would be out signing autographs & taking pictures w/ fans.  After the time was up, Trin was so determined to get an autograph from "Stretch", so she crossed the rope they had put out to keep fans out of the center of the court & ran up to him to ask him to sign her basketball.  He jokingly told her she was breaking the law & she thought he was serious so she turned to walk away & he laughed, called her back, and signed her ball.  Here's the photographic proof. :)

The whole atmosphere was incredible.  The team put on one helluva show & managed to keep both kids & adults entertained the whole time.  Sitting in the bleachers, there were many moments when I was reminded of my own childhood & what a huge deal the Globetrotters were back then.  After watching the show, I can see why they've been around for so long.  Giggling, clapping, & screaming my excitement while THE Harlem Globetrotters played just a few feet from me was like being young again.
